DVD Reviews

I just finished watching Ali Roukas-Canova's Running Contacts DVD and it is FANTASTIC!! I personally train a two on-two off contact performance with my dogs, however, there are a lot of techniques on this DVD that I believe will improve my dogs general performance, speed and confidence on contacts in general. Ali takes you step by step through each phase of her contact training method and demonstrates with her own dogs as well as students dogs of various sizes and breeds.

I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who does agility!! I am excited to go train my own dogs using some of these techniques.

Now I have to go watch Joe Canova's World Class Weaves DVD which I received at the same time. ;)

Joe and Ali,
I have the WCW video and have been training my 10 year old border collie to do weaves. We started agility when he was 8 and had some difficulty getting past 3" channel weaves. Now, thanks to following your method he is doing 6 closed weave poles in our backyard. I also bought Max 200 poles so we could follow your method exactly. He accomplished this in 2 1/2 weeks, training 5 minutes 2x a day. I took him to training class last night and before class, in the back of the ring set up 6 poles in an attempt to proof his learning. He was 20% successful. I have two questions 1- is this to be expected, and 2- should I wait before advancing to 12 poles. At home he is up to 100% success on 6 closed poles for the past two days, moving very quickly, seeking the first pole entry ahead of me. I even tried a couple of proofing from a 30 degree angle and a 90' recall - both were successful - at home - on the first try. Just one other thing. I had my husband, a cartoonist, draw a cartoon that I am thinking of submitting to Clean Run. But I'll need your permission to use reference to WCW's. I'll send it to you to review when we get it finished. Thanks for making your system available to those of us to far away to train in NJ! Hope to see you in our area in St. Petersburg Florida soon. - Linda

I second Monica's suggestion to read Joe Canova's article, get the DVD too if your budget allows. Dogs definitely can and do learn to find the correct entry independently and with understanding, not just muscle memory. Since entries are all different, I don't think muscle memory contributes a lot, but teaching the dog to think and understand the entries makes a huge difference.

Having worked on weave entries with Joe and Ali a couple of years ago, I am very pleased with the ease with which my dogs find their entries, my older dog hasn't missed a weave entry in years. It takes time, but it's well worth it to never have to worry about 'babysitting' the poles.

Although Celine (my daughter) isn't technically a student of yours, she's learned most of what she knows about teaching weaves from what you taught me and from your video, so I thought you'd appreciate seeing this video of her dog Fleet hitting a weave entry in Novice A JWW last weekend.

thanks,
sassie

Hi, Joe

In June of this year, I attended the Ontario Regional Championships with my young Dobe. He did well but we had some weave entry problems. I watched other competitors and thought how different it would be to be able to COUNT on those darn weave entries! To that end, I purchased World Class Weaves. I watched it from start to finish about 4 times and made detailed notes about the levels, stations and actions, creating checklists of the program. We are still working thru parts of it as my boy finds 90 degree entries difficult, but in trial, we haven't missed more than a couple of weave entries all summer (mostly handler-induced) . I have people coming up to me at trials, amazed at how Ronnie attacks his entries and asking what "method" I used to teach him. My strategies in Gamblers and Snooker have changed because I know I can include weaves and have time to do several repetitions. Too cool!! I just wanted to let you know that WCW is making an impact in Ottawa, Canada. Ronnie's initial weave training was a combination of weave-a-matics, offsets, and channels and he had pretty good weaves. But following WCWs took it to another level. Thank you for sharing your experience!!

This is just kudos to the two of you!

Thanks for your ideas and commitment to making this sport fun, for demystifying some of the challenges and super rewarding. Both of your videos are teaching Singe and I to become a consistent, fast and fun team.

Hope to see you out there.

Hi Joe,

I have finished all of the entry training with Daisy, one of the dogs I started, from the beginning, in your system. We are almost finished with the exit training / proofing , too.

My other sheltie, Flower , had surgery on her right patella. She had a lateral luxation and was having pain so I opted for surgery and I am swimming her for strength before she returns to training. I fully intend to finish her WCW training. She was working well at level one entries , station 1,2,3,4,5. I suspect the Patella was slowing her progress and her back leg gave out on her in the poles a couple of times.

I am grateful for your encouragement during my training and also for your taking the time to respond to my emails. This is an awesome system !The training is totally worth it.

I have helped several people and their dogs with the WCW system . Some were dogs with issues and others were new. Everyone who made the commitment to follow the system the way it is designed has had excellent results. I see smiles when they are training weave poles.

I even got my trainer to start her dog in the system. Thanks again !

Andrea

Hi Joe,

Thanks again for the World Class Weaves.

This is my granddaughter Julia, who is 6 years old and her dog Daisy. Julia and Daisy know no other way to train weave poles except your World Class Weave system. I trained the dog and then had my granddaughter learn how to use the system, including as much of the entry training and exit proofing as she could manage to do on her own . She watched the DVD several times and knows the material. Yes, she has a high I.Q.

She knows how to mark her entry, her exit and when and why to go neutral if the dog makes a mistake.

This video is not good quality, but this is Julia's first AKC trial and before she went into the ring she said to me " grandma, there are only 6 poles out there " . Of course I answered back to her , " yes, Julia, in Novice that is all you need ". I know it won't get to you with the same enthusiasm as she said it , but... she said, " WELL, WE got it ! " and she went into the ring and placed third.

This dog can do fast poles ,but paces herself to keep up with the kid.

One of the things I noticed while I was training this system is...when one of the dogs would make a mistake , and I went neutral, the dog would go back to the place where she made the mistake and show me that she fully understood what happened. Then she would race back to the start line and set up and wait for the release and cue to weave. I have 4 dogs that all did this. Is this something you see often ? I still can't get over the communication I got from them.

Thanks again.
We love our weaves.
Andrea
